Few things more clearly mark the swift passage of time than watching your children grow up.
My daughter celebrated her eleventh birthday yesterday, and aside from the disbelief that I am the father of an eleven-year old girl on the brink of adolescence, these are some of the other unsettling thoughts that occurred to me as I marked this occasion:
-My daughter is closer in age than I am to the age I was when I lost my virginity.
-She is also closer in age than I am to the college students at the university where I work.
-She will be old enough to drive in five years.
-She will be attending college in about eight years–which means that if the next eight years of her life blur by as quickly as the past eight years have for me, she will be a freshman in college before I know it. (And my own college years still don’t seem that long ago to me even now.)
On a more positive note… I will say that my daughter has become the brilliant, sweet, charming, and beautiful young lady that I always knew she would be when I first laid eyes on her.
