I had the pleasure last Thursday evening to attend a parent’s night at my daughter’s school to watch her practice band. They played magnificently–much better than I would have expected.
I experienced a strange disconnected feeling of deja-vu while I was there, reminding me of my own fifth grade band practices of many, many years ago. There was also the sensation of coming “full-circle”, so to speak; I started off where my daughter sat those many years ago, and now I got to see it all from the parents’ perspective, as my parents did. All in all, it was an oddly unsettling feeling of disbelief that so much time has passed and so much has changed it what feels like a relatively short time. On the other hand, it also felt very satisfying, like a torch has been passed, so to speak–even though I quit band the following year. I hope my daughter doesn’t follow suit in that regard, and that she sticks with it until it stops being fun for her.
